About this tour

Barolo and Barbaresco are twenty minutes apart by car and they are two different worlds. You can see both in a day without driving and without counting glasses: we collect you where you are staying, the estates are booked in advance and the driver waits outside for as long as it takes.

On one side the wide, severe Langa where Nebbiolo becomes Barolo, with La Morra looking down into the bowl and Serralunga along the ridge. On the other the narrow hills above the Tanaro, where the same grape becomes Barbaresco: closer to Alba, more compact, often made by growers with a few hectares.

In the cellar the wine is explained by the people who make it. We keep the relationships with the estates, take the appointments at the right hours and drive the roads coaches cannot use. Half a day is two estates at an unhurried pace; the full day is three estates, lunch among the vines and time to stop and look at the hills. Whatever you buy travels in the car with us.

Itinerary

  1. Pickup where you are staying 20 min

We collect you in Alba, Barolo, La Morra, Monforte, Barbaresco, Neive, Serralunga or at the farmhouse where you sleep. If you prefer, meet us in Alba in Piazza Michele Ferrero.

  2. First estate, the Barolo side 1h 30min

Cellar visit and tasting with the people who make the wine, in La Morra, Barolo, Monforte or Serralunga depending on what you want to drink and who has room that day.

  3. The La Morra belvedere 20 min

Ten minutes standing above the bowl. From here the Barolo villages line up in front of you, and this is where it becomes obvious why every hill makes a different wine.

  4. Lunch among the vines 1h 30min

Full day only. We book the trattoria or the estate kitchen according to what you feel like: proper Langa cooking without ceremony, or something quick to keep the day light.

  5. Second estate, the Barbaresco side 1h 30min

We cross the Tanaro and climb to Barbaresco or Neive. Same grape, tighter hills, smaller producers: the comparison is the best part of the day.

  6. Third estate or drive back 1h

The full day has room for a third visit before heading home. On the half day we drive straight back to where we started, with the bottles in the boot.

Frequently asked questions

How many estates do we visit?

Two on the half day, three on the full day. More than that is a bad idea: after the third tasting the wines start to blur and the day turns into a race.

Do I have to book the estates myself?

No. We do it. After your booking is confirmed we write to you to understand what you want to drink and send back the programme with the names of the producers.

Are you guides or sommeliers?

No, and we do not pretend to be. We are licensed private-hire drivers: we take you, keep the relationships with the estates and know the roads. The wine is explained by the people who make it, in the cellar, which is the reason you came all this way.

Can I buy wine and take it with me?

Yes, and most guests do. The bottles stay in the boot all day, and the estates ship abroad if you would rather not fly with them.

Does the tour also start from Turin or Milan?

Yes. The price shown is for a start in the Langhe; from Turin, Milan or Genoa we add the return transfer and give you the exact total before you confirm.

What if it rains?

We go anyway: the cellars are indoors, and the hills under November fog are one of the reasons to come here. We only skip the viewpoint stop.
